The Ourika River flows down through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, giving life to this fertile Valley Mountains. It’s a wonderful day-trip from Marrakech, with the opportunity to relax in mountain pools and bike to pristine waterfalls.
This pretty river is just an hour drive from Marrakech. Heading south from Marrakech (about 64 km)the road raises into the hills. Berber families, clustered together in simple clay homes, have worked the land around here for centuries. Stop at the village of Aghbalou stone, like an English church.
Setti Fatma at the end of the paved road from Marrakech is the growing village where many locals have taken to the guide business. You’ll meet plenty of them, offering to take you up to the waterfall, but you can follow the rough tracks yourself just make sure you wear stout shoes or hiking boots. The village itself is not particularly attractive, but if you’re here in late August try and catch the mousse-a lively festival of music, dance and culture that lasts for three days.
